Diving and snorkelling in Skopelos

Skopelos's clear water and varied coastline — pine-shadowed coves, rocky reefs, the odd shipwreck — make it a reasonable base for both casual snorkelling and structured diving, with a dive centre offering courses for beginners through to advanced certification. The visibility and water clarity here are comparable to several better-known Greek diving destinations.

Diving

A diving centre operates with bases in Skopelos Town and near Panormos, offering everything from a one-off Discover Scuba Diving session to full Open Water and Advanced Open Water certification courses. The Christoforos shipwreck near Panormos, opened to the public by Greece's Ministry of Culture, is one of the more notable local dive sites and a popular choice for certified divers passing through.

Snorkelling

Milia's central rock formations and the coves around Stafylos and Velanio are popular, easily accessible snorkelling spots, with enough underwater structure to make the swim worthwhile even close to shore. Velanio in particular rewards snorkelling around its rockier eastern edge.

What to expect

Visibility is generally good outside of windy periods, and water temperatures are comfortable for snorkelling without a wetsuit from roughly June through September. Spring and autumn diving is still possible but typically requires at least a light wetsuit, and conditions are best checked with the dive centre directly before booking.

Before you go

If booking a certification course, allow several days rather than trying to compress it into a short stay, and confirm equipment rental is included before arriving. Most centres can also arrange single discovery dives for visitors who just want a one-off introduction.
