Kastani beach

Kastani is Skopelos’s most photographed beach and its best-known Mamma Mia! filming location, where several of the film’s biggest musical numbers were shot. It sits on the west coast, about 15km from Skopelos Town, and remains one of the most visited beaches on the island despite — or because of — the film connection.

The vibe

A sandy, gently curving bay with pine forest reaching almost to the shoreline and the small island of Dassia visible offshore. The wooden pier and beach bar seen in the film were temporary builds, removed after filming; today’s beach bar is a separate, permanent structure. Despite the fame, the bay itself is modest in size, which is part of why it fills up quickly once the day’s first tour groups arrive.

Access and parking

By car, allow 25–30 minutes from Skopelos Town; the final roughly 500 metres of road are unpaved, so take it slow. A bus stop sits about five minutes’ walk from the beach in season.

Amenities

An organised beach bar with sunbeds, umbrellas and food and drink service, set with a lively, music-led atmosphere that tends to pick up later in the day. The small island of Dassia sits just offshore, also visible in several film shots.

Best time

Kastani gets busy by late morning, especially with Mamma Mia tour groups arriving by bus and boat; an early visit or a late-afternoon swim avoids the worst of the crowds and gives better light for photos of the bay.
