Skopelos has a notable cluster of monasteries on Mount Palouki, the hill directly opposite Skopelos Town across the bay, connected by old paths that make for one of the island's best half-day hikes. Several remain active, with resident nuns who welcome quiet, respectful visitors.

Why visit

Beyond their religious significance, the monasteries offer some of the best views on the island back over Skopelos Town and the harbour, plus a tangible sense of the island's Byzantine and post-Byzantine history that the beaches alone don't convey.

What to see

Evangelistria, built in 1712 on the ruins of an earlier monastery, has a fortress-like exterior built as protection against pirate raids, an 18th-century gold-leaf iconostasis carved in Constantinople, and a small museum of icons and historical artefacts. Timios Prodromos, founded in 1612, was a men's monastery until 1920 and is now home to a community of nuns; its main feast day on 24 June draws locals for an evening liturgy. Agia Varvara, the oldest on the island, dates to 1648 and retains a fortified, walled appearance.

Access and timing

Most of the inhabited monasteries keep similar visiting hours, roughly 08:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00 daily, though this can vary and is worth confirming locally. The monasteries can be reached by a narrow road from Skopelos Town or via the old hiking paths that connect several of them.

Etiquette

Modest dress is expected: covered shoulders and knees for both men and women. Wraps are sometimes available at the entrance for visitors who arrive underdressed.
