Rocky pine-covered coastline of Skopelos

Mamma Mia! filming locations in Skopelos

Most of Mamma Mia!'s outdoor scenes were filmed on Skopelos, standing in for the fictional island of Kalokairi. The four key locations — Kastani beach, Agios Ioannis Kastri chapel, Glysteri beach, and Cape Amarantos — are spread across the island and all freely visitable, with no trace of the film set left behind.

Kastani beach

The film's most-used location, where Sophie and Sky sing 'Lay All Your Love on Me' and Tanya sings 'Does Your Mother Know'. The wooden pier and beach bar seen in the film were temporary builds for the production and were removed afterward; today it's an organised beach with a permanent beach bar of its own, about 15km and 25–30 minutes by car from Skopelos Town.

Agios Ioannis Kastri chapel

The cliff-top church used for the wedding scenes sits on its own rocky islet, connected to the shore by a narrow path and reached via roughly 200 stone steps. It's near Glossa, on the island's northeast coast, and best visited early morning or early evening to avoid both the heat and the tour-boat crowds.

Glysteri beach

Used for several scenes including the steps to the fictional Villa Donna, Glysteri is one of the closest beaches to Skopelos Town, about 4km away, and easily reached by road through an olive grove that also appears in the film.

Cape Amarantos

A rocky, pine-fringed cape used for the opening 'Honey, Honey' diary scene and the 'Our Last Summer' sequence, reached via a dirt road near Agnontas. It's less developed than the other locations, with no facilities, so bring water.

Planning a Mamma Mia day

By car, all four locations can be linked into a single day starting from Skopelos Town. Organised bus and boat tours covering the same route run in season for travellers without a car.

  • Kastani beach — the main musical-number location, 25–30 min from town
  • Agios Ioannis Kastri — the wedding chapel, ~200 steps up
