Skopelos FAQ
Quick answers to the questions that come up most often when planning a Skopelos trip — from getting there to whether you need a car.
Does Skopelos have an airport?
No. The nearest airport is on neighbouring Skiathos, about an hour away by ferry. Most international visitors fly into Skiathos and connect by sea, or travel overland to Volos or Mantoudi (Evia) and take a ferry from the mainland.

Is Skopelos the actual Mamma Mia island?
Yes, for the most part. The majority of outdoor scenes were filmed on Skopelos, including Kastani beach and the Agios Ioannis Kastri wedding chapel, with a smaller number of scenes shot on Skiathos.
Do I need a car?
Not strictly, but it makes a big difference. A summer bus service connects Skopelos Town with the main beaches and Glossa, but it runs on a limited schedule and doesn’t reach every cove. A rental car or scooter gives you the whole island in a day.
When is the best time to visit?
Late May to June and September are the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, without the crowds and prices of July–August. April, May and October suit hiking and sightseeing more than swimming.
How do I get between Skopelos and Skiathos or Alonissos?
Regular ferries and high-speed catamarans connect all three islands, with the Skopelos–Skiathos crossing taking roughly 30 minutes to an hour and Skopelos–Alonissos around 30 minutes, depending on the vessel and route. Always check current schedules close to travel, since routes and frequency shift between seasons.
Is Skopelos good for families?
Yes — beaches like Panormos and Stafylos have gentle entry and nearby facilities, and the island’s small scale and low-key pace suit families who want relaxed days over nightlife.
What’s the food like?
Unfussy and ingredient-led: fresh seafood, slow-cooked meat dishes, and the island’s own twisted cheese pie, which is sold across Greece under the name skopelitiki. Tavernas in Skopelos Town offer the widest selection; beachside spots tend to focus on whatever the day’s catch brings in.
Is Skopelos expensive?
Generally more affordable than Mykonos or Santorini, though prices climb in July and August, particularly for ferries and central accommodation. Booking ferries and rooms well ahead for peak summer keeps costs more reasonable.
