What to Pack for Skopelos

Skopelos is a pebble-beach island with a pine-forest interior and one small town. Packing appropriately is straightforward once you understand these three facts. You don’t need resort-wear. You do need water shoes.

The essentials

  • Water shoes: the single most important beach item on Skopelos. Pebble entry is sharp at most beaches; a basic pair (€10–15) transforms the experience
  • Sun protection: factor 30–50 and a hat — the Mediterranean summer sun is severe, especially on the water
  • Light layers for evenings: even in July the evenings can be cool on hilltops (Glossa) and breezy on the harbour
  • Cash: several tavernas and small shops prefer or only accept cash. ATMs are in Skopelos Town and Glossa; bring a buffer
  • Comfortable walking shoes: the old town’s cobblestones and the monastery trail both demand proper footwear, not sandals

For beaches

  • Water shoes (essential)
  • Beach towel (hotel towels rarely adequate for beach use)
  • Dry bag or waterproof phone case for boat trips
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — particularly for visits to the marine park near Alonissos
  • Snorkelling mask (the island’s coves are clear enough to make this worthwhile even for non-divers)

For hiking and outdoor activity

  • Hiking shoes or sturdy trainers — the monastery trail is manageable in good trainers but not sandals
  • Lightweight backpack (20-25 litre) for day hikes with water, snacks, and beach supplies
  • 2-litre water capacity minimum for the monastery trail — no water sources on the route
  • Headlamp if you plan to do the night cycling tour or walk back from a late beach day

Practical items

  • European Type C (round-pin) plug adapter if travelling from the UK or outside Europe
  • Basic first-aid kit including antiseptic and blister plasters
  • Greek phrasebook or offline language app — appreciated by locals beyond the tourist businesses
  • Lightweight dry-fit or technical clothes for hiking in the forest heat
  • A good book: Skopelos is an island for reading on beaches, at taverna tables, and in the shade of the old town
