Scuba Diving in Skopelos

Skopelos is not a dive destination that draws specialists from across Europe, but it offers accessible, enjoyable diving with good visibility and diverse marine life for those who want to get beneath the surface. The island’s dive centre runs certified courses, guided dives, and snorkelling tours.

What you’ll find underwater

The Aegean around Skopelos holds extensive posidonia (sea grass) meadows, which are among the most biodiverse habitats in the Mediterranean. Rocky reefs around the island’s capes and headlands support populations of grouper, sea bream, wrasse, octopus, and sea urchin. Visibility is typically 15-20 metres in summer, occasionally reaching 25 metres in calm, clear conditions. Water temperature ranges from around 17°C in April to 24-25°C in August and September.

Key dive sites

  • Panagitsa rock (near the harbour): accessible for beginners, 5-12m depth, sea bream and moray eel
  • Cape Amarantos: the northwest cape, current-fed reef with larger fish populations, 10-25m
  • Agios Konstantinos islet (near Glossa): rocky reef, diverse marine life, 8-20m
  • Glysteri cove: good snorkelling and introductory diving, 3-8m, accessible from shore
  • Dasia islet (off the northeast coast): intermediate site, 12-22m, posidonia and rocky reef

Dive centre and courses

A PADI-certified dive centre operates from Skopelos Town, offering: Discover Scuba Diving introductory experiences for non-certified divers; full PADI Open Water certification courses; guided dives for certified divers; and snorkelling guided tours for those who prefer to stay near the surface. Equipment hire is available. The centre typically operates from May to October.

Practical tips

  • Book dive sessions in advance in July and August — the centre operates small groups
  • Best diving months: May-June and September (clearest visibility, good temperature)
  • Snorkelling at Glysteri and the margins of Stafylos, Milia, and Kastani beaches is rewarding without any equipment hire
  • The posidonia meadows are protected — do not anchor boats directly on them
  • Night diving is available on request through the dive centre
