Cycling in Skopelos

Skopelos is more cyclable than most Greek islands — the main road spine is scenic and not heavily trafficked, and the pine forest provides shade for most routes. Mountain bikes can access forest tracks otherwise closed to motor vehicles. A guided night cycling tour through the forest is one of the island’s more distinctive experiences.

Road cycling: the west coast route

The main road from Skopelos Town to Glossa (26km) is paved and reasonably surfaced. The first 12km to Panormos involves significant climbing — this section is a challenge on a road bike but achievable on an e-bike or for fit cyclists. From Panormos to Agnontas the road runs more level through the forest, with sea views at intervals. The full road-cycling circuit (Chora to Glossa by road, return by the same route) is a day’s cycling of around 52km with 800m of climbing — challenging but not extreme.

Mountain biking: forest tracks

Forest tracks branch off the main road throughout the island, accessible by mountain bike. The track from Panormos toward Hovolo beach, the routes above Agnontas, and the tracks on the northern slopes above Glossa all offer off-road cycling with forest shade and occasional sea views. Most tracks are unpaved hard-pack; some are rocky. A local bike rental provider offers mountain bikes and can suggest specific routes.

Night cycling

An organised night cycling tour runs through the pine forest between Skopelos Town and the Panormos area, departing after sunset. The experience is particular to Skopelos — cycling through dense pine forest in near-silence at night, with the smell of resin and the occasional sound of owls, is genuinely unlike anything available on most Greek islands. Tours include lights, helmets, and a guide. Suitable for adults and older children.

Practical tips

  • Bike rentals available from Skopelos Town port area — road bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes
  • E-bikes make the west coast road manageable for most fitness levels
  • Night cycling tour: book through accommodation or at the rental shop; runs June through September
  • Avoid cycling the main road between noon and 4pm in July and August — traffic and heat
  • The track from Agnontas to Limnonari is good for mountain bikes and avoids the rough drive by car
  • Bring lights, a basic repair kit, and water — the forest tracks have no facilities
