Agnontas and Limnonari Beaches, Skopelos

Agnontas is a small fishing harbour 8km south of Skopelos Town — a place where fishing boats outnumber sun loungers and the taverna menu depends on what came in that morning. A 2km dirt track connects it to Limnonari, two connected coves of white pebbles that few visitors find despite being one of the island’s finest swimming spots.

Agnontas village and harbour

Agnontas has a natural harbour protected by a small headland, and has historically served as an alternative landing port for ferries when northerly winds make Skopelos Town harbour difficult. The beach itself is narrow and mostly serves as a boat ramp and local swimming spot; the real draw is the harbour-front tavernas. Eating at Agnontas is a different experience from eating at the beach — you’re watching fishing boats unload against a backdrop of working life rather than arranged scenery.

Limnonari beach

The dirt track south of Agnontas leads in about 2km to Limnonari — two connected coves of light grey-white pebbles with some sandy patches, divided by a small rocky spit. The water between the spits forms an almost enclosed pool of exceptional clarity. Limnonari is organised enough to have seasonal sun loungers and a small snack bar, but not so developed that you feel surrounded. The coves face south, catching full sun through the afternoon. Pine trees on the surrounding slopes give the place a contained quality. It sees its share of visitors in high season, but the road in keeps numbers manageable compared to Panormos.

Why the combination works

Agnontas for lunch, Limnonari for the afternoon — this is one of the best half-day structures on the island. The 2km drive along the dirt track between them takes 5 minutes. You eat real food at a working harbour, then swim in clear water at a cove that feels less developed than Panormos, even if it’s not exactly a secret.

Practical tips

  • Agnontas is 8km from Skopelos Town — a 15-minute drive or a 25-minute bus journey in season
  • The Limnonari track is rough — a standard hire car manages it, but slowly
  • Tavernas at Agnontas serve fresh catch; arrive for lunch before 1pm for best availability
  • Limnonari has no shade infrastructure at the beach edges — the trees are set back
  • The right-hand cove at Limnonari tends to be calmer and slightly less crowded
  • In rougher weather, Limnonari faces more swell than the west-coast beaches — check before making the drive
