Mamma Mia! was filmed on Skopelos in 2007. The production used real locations rather than constructed sets — the cliff-top chapel, the beach bar cove, the harbour — and most of these places remain entirely accessible and largely unchanged. This guide identifies each key location, describes what you’ll actually find there, and explains how to reach it.
Agios Ioannis Kastri — the wedding chapel
The most significant filming location is unambiguously Agios Ioannis at Kastri — the cliff-top chapel where the wedding scene is set in the film. This is a real Byzantine chapel on a real rock above the real Aegean. The production added no permanent structures; the chapel looks essentially as it did before filming.
The approximately 200 steps carved into the rock are the same ones you climb today. The view from the top — sea and coastline in three directions, the rock beneath your feet — appears in the film substantially as it appears in person. The experience of climbing those steps remains genuinely extraordinary, independent of the film entirely.
Kastani beach — the beach bar
The beach bar scenes in Mamma Mia! were filmed at Kastani, but the bar and jetty seen in the film were temporary structures built specifically for the production and removed after filming ended. The current bar at Kastani is a separately and independently operated taverna-bar that predates the film and has continued since. The physical setting — pine trees to the water’s edge, grey pebbles, clear water in a small horseshoe bay — is unchanged and is what the production chose for its look.
Skopelos Town (Chora) — various scenes
Several scenes were filmed in Skopelos Town, including harbour sequences and street scenes in the old town. The production designed Donna’s villa as a set built on a hillside above the port — the set has since been removed, but the hillside location and its views over the harbour are visible from the port walk. The harbour itself, the alleyways of the old town, and the general character of Chora remain as they were.
What to expect visiting
Mamma Mia! tourism is real but not overwhelming — Skopelos has not become a theme park. Agios Ioannis Kastri is busy in July and August, particularly in the morning when tour groups from Skiathos and Skopelos Town arrive. Visit in the late afternoon if you want it quieter. Kastani beach is identifiable by the pine trees and its situation, not by any signage or monument; the beach operates entirely on its own terms.
- Agios Ioannis Kastri: access from the road between Glossa and Loutraki, 45 min from Chora by car
- Kastani: 15 min walk from Panormos beach or 5 min drive from Panormos turnoff
- Skopelos Town: a self-guided walk of the harbour and old town covers most in-town locations
- Mamma Mia Here We Go Again (2018) was not filmed in Skopelos
- No organised Mamma Mia! tour is strictly necessary — all locations are signposted or easily found independently
